There’s something magical about the stillness of snow. The world outside gets blanketed in white, muffled and quiet, while I cozy up inside with my favorite comfort shows. January in the Northeast can be unpredictable—snow one day, sunny skies the next—but one thing I can always count on is the joy of revisiting the TV series that defined my mid-2000s obsession with drama, glamour, and mystery.
When it’s too cold to venture outside, there’s nothing better than diving back into the world of Gossip Girl. This show holds a special place in my heart, not just as the first comfort series I ever loved, but also as the inspiration for starting this very blog. Watching Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen gallivant through Paris, one of them returning with a literal prince, is the ultimate fantasy. Chuck Bass battling his feelings for Blair while living under the shadow of his father’s legacy—who could resist that drama? And then there’s Dan Humphrey, the outsider-turned-insider who writes a bestselling novel exposing all his friends. Every rewatch feels like being inducted into the Upper East Side, waiting on the edge of my seat for the next Gossip Girl blast. It’s indulgent escapism at its finest.
Then there’s Pretty Little Liars, a show that never fails to send shivers down my spine. From the iconic opening sequence by The Pierces—“Got a secret, can you keep it?”—to the Halloween specials filled with hidden clues and haunting vibes, every episode pulls me in. Oh, absolutely, a few plotlines (ahem, Aria and Ezra, anyone?) stir up some lively debates that has left me asking why? even years after the show has ended. Every time I rewatch, I catch new details, subtle foreshadowing, or hidden Easter eggs that keep me coming back for more. It’s the kind of series that thrives on reexamination.
And last but definitely not least, The Vampire Diaries. This show has everything: love triangles, ancient curses, tragic deaths, and some of the best character arcs in supernatural TV history. I will die on the hill that Elena and Stefan were meant to be endgame, but I can’t deny that every relationship had its moments of growth and heartbreak. (R.I.P. Aunt Jenna—you deserved better!) The introduction of the Mikaelson family added even more depth, spawning the fantastic spin-off The Originals. While the series didn’t end with the pairings I rooted for in the beginning, the journey of these characters kept me glued to the screen. By the finale, I was sobbing—not just for the bittersweet ending but for the incredible ride the show had taken me on.
There’s something so comforting about revisiting these stories. While the roads are covered in ice, I can escape into the glitz of Manhattan, the eerie streets of Rosewood, or the supernatural chaos of Mystic Falls. Even though I know every twist and turn, these shows still feel fresh, and they give me a cozy sense of familiarity that makes winter days feel a little brighter.
